Deana Lawson: 'Planes' at The Underground Museum

The Underground Museum is pleased to present Deana Lawson: Planes, a solo exhibition of photography on view through February 17, 2019.

Deana Lawson’s work negotiates knowledge of self-hood through a corporeal dimension. Her photographs speak to the ways that sexuality, violence, family, and social status may be written, sometimes literally, on the body. Many of her subjects were strangers she encountered on the street, placed in familiar domestic spaces, and surrounded them with sentimental artifacts, some of which the artist collected throughout her own travels, and some that belonged to the subjects themselves. Her meticulously staged photographs and installations became gathering places for both their subjects and viewers, exalting the brilliance of their existence.
