Arlene Shechet
b. 1951

Arlene Shechet has received broad recognition for her corporeal and suggestive ceramic work. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a 2004 John S. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship Award, three separate New York Foundation for the Arts awards, a 2010 Anonymous Was A Woman Artist Award, a 2010 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, and a 2011 American Arts and Letters Award for Art. Her work is included in both public and private collections worldwide including the Brooklyn Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, KS. 
Shechet has exhibited her work extensively in the United States and abroad. Her recent solo show That Time, organized by the VCUarts Anderson Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond where it debuted in September 2012, was recently on view at the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, NC. On view from January 17 through July 16, 2014, the Rhode Island School of Art and Design Museum will present an exhibition of Shechet’s Meissen porcelain sculptures produced during her residency at Meissen Porcelain Manufacture. For one component of this exhibition, Shechet will oversee a complete re-hanging of the museum's porcelain gallery.
Other recent solo exhibitions include Breaking the Mold at Nature Morte, Berlin, 2012; .SUM at the Nerman Museum, Overland Park, KS, 2012; Blow by Blowcurated by Ian Berry, at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY, 2009; Here and There at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, CO, 2009; The Sound of It at Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, 2010; Parallel Play at Dieu Donne, 2012; and The Thick of It at James Kelly Contemporary, Santa Fe, 2011. 
Shechet holds a B.A. from New York University and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives and works in New York City and upstate New York.
